Your First Step to Success

So what's the next step? Well, if you are like me, you will want to get going as quickly as possible. So here is something I want you to do right now - it only takes a few minutes, and believe me, it could be the most profitable few minutes of your life. I want you to go online and click on this link.

Sign up for the basic program to start with. That will secure your place in a fast-growing group of people who are keen to earn serious money from the Internet.

It is FREE to sign up, and as soon as possible - within 48 hours - I want you to upgrade to the Advantage Program, which at the time of writing is only $5 per month. That will give you access to tons of valuable information, AND will ensure that the people who sign up under you will earn you money.

Be sure to come back here when you have completed the signup. You can study the full details of the Buildreferrals program later.

Done it? Good. You have just taken a small but important step to secure your future prosperity.

The next step is optional and a little more complicated. If you do not already have a web site (incidentally, you will get a free one as part of the Buildreferrals program you just signed up for, but that is dedicated to a particular purpose, so you will want one you can edit yourself) then find yourself some free web space and reserve it for your use.

There are a number of ways to do this, and plenty of free web space on offer - just go to a major search engine and look for "free web space". Some hosts are better than others in that they offer more space (you want at least 10 and preferably 20 Mb) and they don't plaster their advertising banners all over your site. You can also buy web space, which you will almost certainly one day want to do in order to obtain the best service.

Another (international) free host is Hypermart who can also register domain names and provide shopping cart facilities and software. Having your own domain name is important for credibility on the web, so do it as soon as possible.

I said that this last step was optional, in that you can operate your online publishing business without a web site and only using email, but it does make life much easier if you can refer people to your URL (web address) to download your products without your direct involvement. Needless to say, if you have a web site you will have to spend some time learning how to design pages and upload them, but many hosts make this easy these days by providing "design wizards" to take the pain out of the process.

When you have demonstrated that you are serious about this business, I will show you what do do with your website and how to pull traffic to it by the ton.

What You Need to Succeed

Here is a summary of the minimum equipment and tools you need to run this business:
  • A personal computer. I don't want to get into the Mac v PC argument, but there is no question that as far as free and low-cost software is concerned, PCs win hands down. It doesn't have to be the last word in technical brilliance, but it does need to be able to handle the Internet without running out of steam. I recommend as a minimum specification: Pentium 133, 56k modem, 32Mb RAM, 4Gb hard disk, CD-ROM.
  • Editing software. A decent wordprocessor (e.g. MS Word); an HTML editor (I use Dreamweaver and Homesite, but there are easier packages for beginners -check out this site for freebies. Get the excellent EBookCompiler from EBookCompiler.com
  • FTP software such as CuteFTP to send your pages to the web; a decent email package, such as Outlook Express or Eudora; and a web browser, which, for my money (actually it's free) has to be Internet Explorer. Everything you need to do can be accomplished with the above, and, as you are reading this, you probably have most of it already.

There is one more thing you need: a product. Not just any old product, but something people want badly enough to spend a few minutes downloading and perhaps an hour or two reading.

You may be giving it away, but that does not mean it can be rubbish. Don't insult your customers by trying to pass off junk as having a value - by and large, people are not stupid and they can spot scams and rip-offs a mile away.

My advice is always give away something of value, and that value will return to you.

I think you can tell that many hours of work have gone into the construction of this EBook in an effort to give something of real value. I do not suggest you go to the lengths I have gone to unless you are a budding writer and enjoy the process, but whatever you do, do it as well as you are able. Your products reflect directly on you - so make them good ambassadors.

Finding a Product

So you need a product. You have two choices:
  1. Create one.
  2. Obtain one from someone else.
If you decide to create your own information product, here is the process you will need to go through:
  1. Think of a Good Idea for a product. To be universally popular, it should: (a) answer a basic need or address a widespread human problem or issue; (b) be within your experience or your ability to research and write intelligently about; (c) lend itself to the medium of the EBook.
  2. Research and write it up. That includes structuring your writing in a logical way, creating chapters and sub-heads and so on. Use this EBook as a model, if you get stuck.
  3. Turn it into an EBook. Using EBookCompiler, you can do this quite easily, once you have saved your wordprocessed document as HTML (easy with MS Word).
Not so difficult. And, if all that is too daunting, you can always give away someone else's information product as a way to attract visitors to your web site, where you make your buck by referrals to other sites (see above) and Affiliate Programs , which I will deal with shortly. And, of course, you can give away THIS EReport!
