How To Earn Money From WritingWriting for money is a dream shared by many, from all walks of life, yet few ever achieve their ambition. For some, it is a simple matter of failing to do the work required of them: to make good money from writing you need to be a good writer. That doesn't mean you need to be an exceptionally gifted writer, but you should at least have a thorough knowledge of the language you choose to write in - including punctuation, spelling and grammar. After all, you could never hope to be a decent car mechanic until you had mastered the tools of the trade. Words - and their correct arrangement - are the tools of the writer's trade.Many people think that writing for money is somehow beneath them: people should appreciate their artistic genius regardless of whether or not they actually earn money from their writing. Those people are best left to their own devices, as they are unlikely to take advice from anyone. One in a million may indeed have exceptional talent, but here we are interested only in helping those who wish to make their living - or a substantial part of their living - from writing. A mistake to avoid at the outset is excessive ambition. By all means have your great novel sketched out in your head, but do cut your teeth on something easier first: you may want to be a mountaineer one day, but don't start your training on Everest - there are plenty of smaller peaks to conquer first. A good place to start is where you find yourself, right now. Just as you may start your mountaineering training by jogging around the local park and shinning up the climbing wall in the gym, so you can start your writing career from where you are now - maybe even from the very place you are sitting. Assuming that you have some kind of life experience behind you and you are not totally fresh out of the cradle, then you have some material to hand that can be put to work. Spend some time making notes about subjects where you have some special knowledge from your own experience. You don't have to be a world class expert, but if you know a sure-fire way to keep ants out of your kitchen, or have a knack for catching catfish, or you have worked out the best recipe ever for blueberry cheesecake, you have something to work with. Now look at what you are interested in. You are interested in stuff, aren't you? If you're not, then give up any thought of being a writer and get yourself a factory job! To be a good writer, you need a powerful interest in something - preferably everything! If you don't feel any excitement and interest for what you write about, why would anyone else? On this page you will find ads for a number of books and booklets that people have written hoping that people will buy them. I hope you will take the time to click on some of them and read the sales messages and judge for yourself how much enthusiasm the writer has for their subject. Of course, some of the sales material will have been written by professionals, and you can only judge the writer's style by buying the book - but I don't expect you to spend a pile of your savings on this kind of research. You should, however, read books on your own subject, just to see what else is out there. Sometimes you may find that your particular interest has very few books about it. This could mean that there are so few people sharing this interest that little has yet been written about it and it is a hot niche waiting to be exploited, or - more likely - the market is so tiny that nobody has bothered with it. However, whereas once upon a time a tiny niche market with a few thousand adherents worldwide would have been extremely difficult to exploit, with the advent of the internet it is now very easy to tap into even the tiniest of markets. If you have something worth saying about breeding the Striated Puff Toad, you may find enough people out there who share your fascination to make it worthwhile writing a book on the subject. How To Earn Money From Writing (contd.)There is a danger in tiny niche markets, however, and that is in reaching saturation point too quickly to make any real money. Once everyone in your niche has read everything you have to say, you will have to delve deeper and deeper into that particular pit in order to extract workable coal. Fine if that is what you want to do. However, there is a lot to be said for finding a bigger and easier seam to work.It is a matter of simple arithmetic that if there are one hundred times as many people interested in subject A than in subject B, then A is going to have the potential to sell more books. It will also have more competition, but don't worry about that too much: how many people do you know who only have one book on their favourite subject? People who are interested in beekeeping will buy lots of books about beekeeping. Likewise: golf (although why anyone reads books about golf is beyond me); stamp collecting; fishing; knitting; cookery; boats - in fact, any subject on the shelves of your local library will have a hundred or more titles - often thousands. Cultivate the attitude of 'giving of yourself': you must learn to give in order to receive, and if you genuinely give good value, you will receive commensurate rewards. Starting from the opposite end - thinking of the rewards before you offer your part of the bargain - is likely to shift your focus prematurely to the wrong end of the equation. In other words - give good value for money, and the money will come. Put your focus on offering the best quality you can muster, and you will build an appreciative and loyal audience for future work. If you give of your best all the time, you will raise your own standards and your expectations of yourself will also rise. This way, you will constantly improve and your readers will want to buy everything you write because they know you are giving of your best. Anything less is unworthy of you. If your aim is to have articles published by mainstream print-based magazines, you need some sort of a track record before you approach an editor. Sounds like a catch-22? The way around it is to write several articles and post them on an online resource such at Go-Articles or EzineArticles. That way, not only can a potential publisher easily read some of your work, but publishers of online newsletters can use your articles and build up a ready readership for you. OK, you don't get paid for these articles, but you do get useful exposure, which in time may develop into income. Steer well clear of paper-based 'publishers' who prey on the unrealistic ambitions of would-be writers, and charge large sums of money to produce a stack of unsaleable, printed books. They are known as 'vanity publishers' and will do nothing to distribute or market your work. If you self-publish via Lulu, or one of the other online services, you will need to put a good deal of time and energy into marketing your book. You can pay others to do this for you - and at least a professional-looking cover is well worth the investment - and you can also do a decent job yourself.
